What causes man boobs
Having male breast growth is annoying but common. An estimated 24-65% of adult men have gynecomastia, the medical term for male breast growth.
For the majority of men, it causes no symptoms. However, especially in adolescent males, you may also have breast pain and swelling under your nipples.
The causes of gynecomastia are widespread and varied. Some of the possible causes include the following:
- An imbalance of hormones, particularly estrogen, and testosterone
- Several medications can cause gynecomastia, including those for an enlarged prostate; medications for ADHD, anti-anxiety medications, medications for ulcers, and those for treating heart conditions or cancer
- Illicit substances, including marijuana and anabolic steroids
Other health conditions can also cause gynecomastia, including the following:
- Tumors
- Aging, especially if you’re overweight
- Liver failure or cirrhosis
- Hyperthyroidism (producing too much thyroid hormone)
- Kidney failure

Breast reduction surgery
Breast reduction surgery is also called reduction mammaplasty. Although the male and female breasts are slightly different in that the male breast does not have milk glands, the procedure is similar for breast reduction in men and women.
When you come in for surgery, you must fill out all the forms and prepare by not eating before the procedure. Then, we’ll have you change into a gown and start your IV line to give you anesthesia. You won’t feel any pain during the surgery itself.
We’ll remove the fat from selected areas on your breast by liposuction. We may also need to reposition your nipples, depending on how much fat we remove.

The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that you can go home the same day.
After the procedure
After your breast reduction procedure, expect some soreness and swelling. This is normal but should usually go away within a few days.
You will need to wear a supportive undergarment while you’re healing. This is important to prevent further complications.
Although the procedure is usually done in less than a day, plan to take a week off work if possible. You can resume full activity after 3-4 weeks, although you can do light walking before.
