A neck lift takes about two hours and involves two or all three of the following techniques:
- Liposuction is performed for the removal of fat. It starts with an incision below the chin. The fat deposits are removed by inserting a small cannula (a hollow tube with an opening near its blunt end) beneath the skin and into the fatty tissue. The cannula is used to break up the fat and is attached to a suction device to remove the fat from the neck area.
- Cervicoplasty is performed to remove excess skin on the neck. An incision is made under your chin and/or behind the ears. Dr. Munasifi then removes and redrapes the skin, securing it with sutures or a special type of permanent adhesive glue.
- Platysmaplasty is done if you have a banded appearance on the neck. The incisions made under the chin and behind the ears for cervicoplasty can be used for platysmaplasty. A tiny instrument is inserted to either remove a portion of specific neck muscles or realign them, which tightens the middle area of the neck. Dr. Munasifi sutures areas of the muscles in order to maintain them in the best position.
What to Expect
When the procedure is completed, an elastic bandage is applied to the neck and head, and a bandage and tape is applied across the chin or behind the ears. These bandages help to reduce swelling and discomfort. After a period of time in our recovery room, you will be released to go home. A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled one week after surgery to remove large bandages and to check on your progress. Around this time, most patients feel comfortable with going out in public wearing scarves or face makeup to disguise any noticeable bruising. You may experience some soreness and bruising but these symptoms should subside within a few weeks. Over-the-counter pain medication can be taken to ease any discomfort. We recommend you sleep on your back with your head elevated for the first few nights to aid in reducing swelling. Intense workouts should be avoided for about six weeks but light exercise can continue after about two weeks. Please call our front desk if you have any questions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a neck lift treat?
A neck lift with Dr. Munasifi improves excess fat, lax skin, and muscle bands on the neck, including what is commonly known as “turkey neck.” The result is an overall more youthful appearance.
What procedures complement a neck lift?
A facelift and neck lift are often performed concurrently to address signs of aging from the mid-face to the shoulder. In some cases, fat grafting is performed in addition to a neck lift to create a seamless neckline.
How long does a neck lift last?
Although neck lifts are long lasting, they do not stop the natural aging process. With proper skin care and maintaining a healthy weight, a neck lift can last 10 – 12 years.
What kind of anesthesia is required for a neck lift?
Neck lift surgery is considered an outpatient procedure and is typically performed under general anesthesia. Advanced Plastic Surgery Center uses a board-certified anesthesiologist to administer all anesthesia. Although patients will be released the same day, they will need an adult to drive them home or they can take advantage of our car services. In either case, patients will need another adult to accompany them.
When can I return to work after a neck lift?
Typically, patients are able to return to work within 4 – 5 days. However, some swelling and bruising may still be present. Makeup can be applied to hide these symptoms, but for optimal aesthetic, we suggest patients allow for a 2 – 3 week recovery period before returning to work and attending social events.
