About Arm Lift Surgery
Exercise can tone the muscles of the upper arms, but push-ups will never remove excess skin, no matter how many you do. An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes the excess skin and fat on the upper arms, making them firm again. This loose skin and fat on the upper arms develop either as a result of aging or significant weight loss. For this reason, it is frequently done as part of post-bariatric surgery. Arlington, VA plastic surgeons Dr. Talal Munasifi and Dr. James Economides will listen to your concerns about your upper arms and create a customized surgical plan for you. They have a host of techniques available to them, and will choose the ones that are best for your anatomy and the results you want. If you would like to learn more about how brachioplasty can enhance the physique of your arms, please call and schedule a consultation at Advanced Plastic Surgery Center in Arlington, VA. We will be happy to sit down with you to discuss all the benefits of arm lift surgery.

What to Expect
Advanced Plastic Surgery Center takes great pride in our patient care after procedures. Multiple follow-up appointments will be scheduled (free of charge) so Dr. Munasifi can monitor your progress and healing.
If drains are placed in the incisions to capture post-surgical fluids, these will be removed in a few days. After 4 – 5 days, the bandages are removed, and the sutures are removed in 1 – 2 weeks. For the majority of the bruising and swelling to subside, however, recovery usually takes 3 – 4 weeks. The swelling will resolve last, and we may give you compression garments to wear to keep the swelling to a minimum. It’s normal to experience some soreness, bruising, tightness, numbness, itching, and swelling. We will give you a prescription for pain medication, but many patients find that non-prescription painkillers such as Tylenol are enough. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for about six weeks but light exercise can be resumed around this time. Daily walks are encouraged the day after surgery to help with circulation and aid in recovery.
Scars will only be seen when you lift your arms, and they will become less noticeable over time. We will provide you with at-home strategies to help the scars heal faster and better and may recommend a laser treatment. We will provide you with detailed post-treatment instructions for optimal recovery. We are available to answer any of your questions and encourage you to call our office if you have any concerns. Our goal is to provide you with high-quality service from start to finish.
Frequently Asked Questions
What areas does an arm lift treat?
An arm lift with Dr. Munasifi removes excess skin and fat that sometimes develop on the underside of the upper arms. As a result, the arms look toned with no more hanging flesh.
What procedures complement an arm lift?
It is not uncommon for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight to need a series of body contouring procedures to remove the excess skin that remains, such as a thigh lift, tummy tuck, or body lift.
How long does an arm lift last?
Dr. Munasifi’s arm lift techniques are long lasting, but the aging process does continue and varies from person to person. While sagging of the tissue on the upper arms can recur, it is unlikely to return to the same degree as before the surgery.
What kind of anesthesia is required for an arm lift?
The surgery is performed either using general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with sedation. It is usually an outpatient procedure, which means you can go home the same day. Anesthesia is always provided by a board-certified anesthesiologist. However, you will need to have someone available to drive you home. Alternatively, we can provide a car service to bring you to your surgery appointment and take you home for a minimal fee, provided you have an adult to accompany you.
When can I return to work after an arm lift?
All of our patients are able to leave the house the day after their procedure. Many of our patients begin working from home within 4 – 5 days, and most return to the office within 1 – 2 weeks. If you have a job that requires lifting or physical work, you may need 3 – 6 weeks off.
