Breast Reduction Q & A

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure to decrease the size of large or pendulous breasts. If your breasts are too large, they can cause problems ranging from neck and back pain to skin rashes and infections. They can get in the way of many physical activities that can help you lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Additionally, you might not be happy with the appearance of your breasts or how you fit into clothing.

What happens during breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery usually takes 3-4 hours. While you’re under general anesthesia, Dr. Economides makes an anchor-shaped incision across the underside of your breast and up to your nipple. If he needs to reposition or reshape your nipple, he may also cut around your nipple.

After Dr. Economides removes breast tissue, fat, and extra skin, he reshapes your breast tissue and repositions your nipples. He usually does not need to use drainage tubes.  He will then close the incisions with sutures and apply a compression wrap.

What should I expect after breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you can go home to recover after your anesthesia wears off. You may have some soreness and swelling, but these symptoms are typical after surgery and subside within a few days. Your sutures will dissolve and do not need to be removed.

You will wear a surgical bra for a few weeks after your surgery until any swelling and bruising subside. Most patients say that breast reduction surgery helps them feel lighter, more self-assured, and confident in their appearance.

Does insurance ever cover breast reduction surgery?

Insurance companies may sometimes cover breast reduction surgery if you have a medical history of problems caused by your breasts and have a medical necessity for coverage.

For example, if you’ve been treated for back pain or have chronic skin or soft tissue infections due to the size of your breasts, and a record of medical care as evidence, your insurance plan might agree that breast reduction surgery is necessary. Every insurance company is different, so talk to your insurance provider about your needs.
